Secret Service, who monitor this facility to watch over the President’s children who attend this school. Metropolitan Technologies was selected to provide design engineering services for Security Systems that included CCTV and Access Control as well as IT Network Design for this famous K-12 facility. MT also provided infrastructure design for both wired and wireless, as well as all Audio Visual Systems consulting services for the renovations and the addition of a new building on the School campus. In addition, MT’s solution to permanently re-route outside carrier plant cable to accommodate the new construction also allowed for the temporary re-routing of carrier services prior to the demolition of an existing campus building.

Threat and Vulnerability Assessment

Much attention has been focused on the educational community and the effects of school-based violence from within the community and from the outside world. In the aftermath of the terroristic threats realized on 9/11 and the subsequent media attention to suicide bombers and international terrorism in general, the community is asking the school boards to revisit its plans for providing the best protection for its children and staff. Unfortunately the media focus on events such as the massacre in Columbine has resulted in copycat murders and increased the pressure on school boards to provide adequate protection to its pupils and staff. School boards are then challenged to provide a balanced and cost effective system of security in a manner that is conducive to education – and the school district budget. In an effort to help the community and school board determine the actual threats to their property and populations, and the status of the site’s vulnerability to those threats, we developed a Threat and Vulnerability Assessment that used the best-in-class recommendations of government and educational security sources as it’s guideline. Using this tool Metropolitan Technologies measured the compliance several school district facilities to these standards. The result was a professional report that provided clear recommendations for policies, procedures and products that could be used to ameliorate vulnerabilities. Using this template we examined the vulnerability of the Berkeley High School facilities and found key recommendations that could dramatically improve the safety and security of the building and its occupants. A good portion of the recommendations were low cost/no cost solutions such as the revision of existing procedures and institution of training exercises. The school district is using these guidelines to continually improve its security posture.
